UPDATE: Stryker Hip Lawsuits Centralized in Federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL)

June 12, 2013 — Federal judges have decided to centralize lawsuits involving the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip replacements in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL #2441). The MDL will transfer future lawsuits into one federal court for coordinated pre-trial proceedings in the U.S. District Court of Minnesota.

Residents of Texas who decide to file a Stryker hip lawsuit could potentially join the MDL. In the United States, most large, complex medical device litigations are resolved through the MDL process. Like a class action, the litigation is streamlined and more cost-effective. However, unlike a class action, your claim stays independent. You also keep your own legal representative to help negotiate a potential settlement agreement or take your case to trial, if necessary.

You may qualify for a Texas Stryker hip lawsuit if you were injured by:

  • Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Replacement
  • Stryker ABG II Modular-Neck
  • Stryker Trident (Hemispherical Cup, Acetabular PSL Cup

Stryker Rejuvenate and ABG II Hip Replacement Recall

Stryker Orthopedics officially announced a voluntary recall of the Rejuvenate and ABG II “modular-neck stems” in June 2012. The stems were sold for less than two years and implanted in at least 20,000 people. The recall was due to:

“…the potential for fretting and corrosion at the modular-neck junction which may result in ALTR (adverse local tissue reactions), as well as possible pain and/or swelling at or around the hip.”

The “modular-neck junction” is a unique feature of the Rejuvenate and ABG II. It is an interchangeable metal component that allows a surgeon to “custom-fit” the implant. Unfortunately, the metal-on-metal junction can grind together, corrode, and chip off pieces of cobalt and chromium. This can cause toxic metal poisoning (metallosis), which can cause pain and swelling in the hip, as well as systemic reactions in other areas of the body. Many patients have required medical tests, treatment, or revision surgery.

Problems with the Stryker Trident Hip Replacement

Stryker Orthopedics is facing hundreds of lawsuits involving injuries caused by components of the Trident Hip Replacement System, which were recalled in January 2008. The ceramic components are used in the “socket” part of the hip. Stryker attributed the recall to “manufacturing residuals” that could contaminate the implants. They also received two warning letters from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for poor manufacturing and ignoring “continual complaints” from customers who received defective Trident hip replacements.

FDA Warning Letters for Stryker Trident:

Stryker Hip Replacement Injuries and Complications

  • Pain or discomfort
  • Adverse local tissue reactions (inflammation, swelling, etc.)
  • Tissue damage or death (necrosis)
  • Bone loss (osteolysis)
  • Limited flexibility or walking ability
  • Loud squeaking, clicking, or popping noises
  • Metal poisoning (metallosis)
  • High levels of metal ions in the bloodstream
  • Systemic reactions from metallosis
  • Loose, unstable, or fractured hip
  • Bone fractures
  • Pseudo-tumors, soft-tissue growths, etc.
  • Revision surgery
  • And more
